WETBULB: Master System Guide
Carbon & Water Aware Data Center Computing Β· Track 2: Build a Sustainable Future
Your LCD Blue Screen: The Exact Fix From Your Photo
We inspected your setup photo in detail. Here is why the screen is solid blue and how to fix it in 30 seconds.
Looking at your LCD's 4 wires:
- Power is working: The Red (VCC) and Brown (GND) wires are in the breadboard power rail. That is why the blue backlight turns ON!
- Communication is DISCONNECTED: Your Green Wire (SDA) and Orange Wire (SCL) from the LCD are plugged into empty rows on the breadboard near the DHT11!
- Because they are in the breadboard instead of the Arduino, the Arduino has zero electrical data connection to the screen. The screen never receives any text commands!
- Move Wire 1: Take the Green Wire (SDA) out of the breadboard and plug it directly into Arduino pin A4!
- Move Wire 2: Take the Orange Wire (SCL) out of the breadboard and plug it directly into Arduino pin A5!
- Turn the blue trimmer knob: On the back of the LCD, turn the small blue square potentiometer with a small screwdriver. The letters will appear immediately!

π How the Rack Connects to the Whole Project
Understanding the two-way telemetry bridge between your physical rack and the web dashboard:
The Arduino reads live air from the DHT11 (temp & humidity) and reads judge interaction from the analog joystick. It runs Stull's equation every 2 seconds to calculate real-time wet-bulb temperature.
Over the blue USB cable at 115200 baud, the Arduino continuously streams serial messages:
S,23.4,61 β (Live air: 23.4Β°C, 61% relative humidity) J,PAGE,2 β (Joystick moved to Screen 2) J,W,60 β (Judge shifted slider: 60% carbon weight, 40% water weight) J,BTN β (Judge clicked button: run 24h replay simulation)
In
dashboard/index.html, the browser receives the live rack telemetry. It queries the PJM grid fuel mix (coal, gas, nuclear, solar) to calculate carbon intensity (g CO2/kWh) and cooling water consumption (L/kWh). It finds the greenest, most water-efficient window to run compute jobs.
The dashboard commands the rack via serial:
L,*RUN NOW,~-24%H2O,200,380,50 β (Displays "RUN NOW", spins fan at PWM 200) L,WAIT 3h,~-24%H2O,0,410,50 β (Displays "WAIT 3h", shuts off fan to save water)The fan physically speeds up and slows down on your desk as cooling tower demand changes!
dashboard/index.html, click the glowing "Connect rack" button in the top right. Select your Arduino Uno COM port. The indicator will turn green with Rack live β!
π§ The WETBULB Science & Project Architecture
The environmental problem and technical innovation behind your submission:
The Environmental Crisis in Virginia
Northern Virginia ("Data Center Alley" in Ashburn, Loudoun County) powers ~70% of global internet traffic. The data centers draw over 4 Gigawatts of continuous power.
To cool these server halls, evaporative cooling towers evaporate hundreds of millions of gallons of potable drinking water every summer. When wet-bulb temperature spikes, water consumption triples!
The Flaw in Carbon-Only Schedulers
Existing carbon-aware systems (like Google's) only look at grams of CO2 per kWh.
The unintended disaster: Shifting an AI training job to a high-solar hour often shifts it directly into the hottest, most humid hour of the dayβcausing cooling towers to drain drinking water reservoirs!
π 5-Minute 804 Hacks Presentation Pitch & Demo
Crafted specifically to hit the maximum 100/100 points on the 804 Hacks Rubric:
1. The Virginia Problem
"Right here in Northern Virginia, Data Center Alley processes 70% of global internet traffic. Everyone talks about the carbon footprint of AI, but there is a silent crisis: water. Evaporative cooling towers in Ashburn consume billions of gallons of drinking water each year."
2. Introducing WETBULB
"WETBULB is the first carbon- AND water-aware compute scheduler for data centers. Instead of looking at carbon alone, we combine PJM grid emissions with real-time thermodynamic wet-bulb modeling using Stull's equation."
3. The Live Rack Demonstration (35 Points!)
"Here is our live rack prototype. This fan represents the data center's evaporative cooling tower. Watch what happens when I breathe humid air onto our sensor... wet-bulb rises, and the cooling tower spins up! Now watch the dashboard connect over Web Serial..."
4. 24% Water Savings & Kaggle Backtest
"Across a full year of PJM hourly generation and Virginia weather data, shifting flexible AI workloads with WETBULB reduced cooling water consumption by 24% without increasing carbon emissions. That saves millions of gallons per facility."
5. The Sustainable Future
"AI shouldn't drink our rivers dry. WETBULB proves we can build sustainable digital infrastructure. Thank youβwe'd love to take your questions!"
